Des avions, de la fumée et la poussière des travaux… De la baie-vitrée de leur maison du quartier de Mourepiane, Marie Didot et Jean-Pierre Eyrault, un couple de sexagénaires, observent l’activité du port de Marseille, tout proche.
Si elle participe au rayonnement commercial et touristique de la ville, elle est plutôt perçue comme un poison atmosphérique par ces riverains du littoral, premières victimes, selon eux, de l’essor du port maritime. « J’ai un cancer de la gorge depuis 4 ans, le diagnostic est tombé comme un coup de massue », tousse le retraité. « Je ne suis pas le seul : ma sœur est décédée d’un cancer, mon ami d’enfance aussi, et sa sœur a un cancer des poumons. Tous, sont des gens qui ne fumaient pas, qui mangeaient normalement, mais qui ont le malheur d’habiter ici ». Et selon cet habitant des quartiers nords qui s’investit dans le réseau associatif contre la pollution de l’Estaque, il y aurait un lien direct entre sa maladie et les fumées des bateaux que le mistral ramène sur son balcon.
Une situation critique pour les Marseillais
Cette pollution maritime s’ajoute aux émissions d’ozone, de particules émisent par le transport et l’industrie, ainsi qu’au dioxyde d’azote provoqué par le trafic routier. Ce cocktail toxique asphyxie les résidents de l’Estaque. « Le coeur de la ville est impacté par la circulation chronique et la rugosité de la ville confinant l’air qui a du mal à se renouveler », souligne Dominique Robin, directeur d’Atmosud Marseille, une organisation qui étudie la qualité de l’air à travers son réseau de capteurs placés à des endroits stratégiques. « Les quartiers tels que la Joliette ou l’Estaque subissent la pollution des navires, ce qui contribue à la dégradation de la santé de la population ».
Les résultats récoltés en 2017 par AtmoSud démontrent que 90% des émissions de polluants sont causées par les transports, soit 45% pour le trafic routier mais aussi 45% pour les navires qui représentent aussi, « près de 30% des émissions d’azote qui proviennent des navires ont un impact sur la ville ».
Pour l’heure, les initiatives se font attendre, avec notamment, l’électrification des quais, le passage au GNL (Gaz Naturel Liquéfié).
